Amazon Painter, Attica, Greece, 2nd third of the 4th century BCE

Red-figure pelike of classical, elegant form with a pear-shaped body on a low foot and a broad open neck with an everted lip. The handles extend down to the widest part of the vessel. Addition of white slip and yellow painting. The central motif on the front is a white panther between two fighting Amazons. On the back, two male figures wearing himatia stand opposite each other, executed in silhouette. Presented within regularly bordered fields, the scenes terminate in ornamental egg-and-dart bands. Part of the vessel below the handle is decorated with a large palmette.
